Mouvement du Peuple (حركة الشعب - People's Movement) was established,
illegally, in 2005 by Mohamed Brahmi (1955-2013), as the Mouvement unioniste
nassériste (Nasserist Unionist Movement) and legalized on 8 March 2011.
On 20
March 2011, Mouvement du Peuple merged with Mouvement unioniste progressiste
(Progressive Unionist Movement) to form the Mouvement du peuple unioniste
progressiste (MPUP). The merger, however, was contested by different members of
the two parties; a member of the board of Mouvement du Peuple rejected the
merger and established a new board. The two parties competed in the election for
the Constituent Assembly: the MPUP obtained 36,641 votes (0.98%) but could not
secure representation, while the "renewed" Mouvement du peuple obtained less
votes (30,259; 0.75%) but secured two seats (out of 217).
In the aftermath of
the election, the two parties merged again under the name of the winning party,
Mouvement du peuple.
In July 2013, Mouvement du peuple joined the Front
Populaire, which caused the resignation of Brahmi. The murder of Brahmi on 25
July 2013 caused the fall of the government led by the Islamic party Ennahdha.
